Whitening

How Long Does It Take?

Dental Appointments

You’ll need to come into Maven Dental Samuel Street (formerly Samuel Street Dental Practice) for two short appointments approximately 3-5 days apart. At the first appointment impressions are taken of both the upper and lower arches so that bleaching trays can be fabricated to fit your teeth precisely. The bleaching trays are then fabricated from a 1-2mm thick, colourless (see through/invisible) material which is yours to keep.

At the second appointment you are then shown how to dispense the bleach and how to fit the trays over your teeth correctly to achieve the best results.

Applications and Time Required

After one of our dentists have shown you how to use the system, you can keep bleaching until your teeth have reached the desired shade of white. The length of time required to reach this state does vary however depending on how often you manage to wear the trays and change the gel. The trays can be worn up to 8 hours a day (i.e. Gel changed 8 times in total) and desired results can be achieved in as little as 2 weeks. We find most patients only manage 2-4 treatments per day and the desired results can take longer to eventuate. It’s all up to you and how dedicated you are to achieving whiter teeth!

What Product Is Used?

The bleaching gel used is a 15% Carbamide peroxide solution. The gel is designed to be changed in the trays every hour. Your saliva will start to dilute the solution after this time period and it’s effectiveness at bleaching is hampered.

How It’s Different to Other Products

One of the most common misconceptions is that a professional dentist supervised bleaching system is more expensive or the products purchased via your local pharmacy/supermarket is just as effective. The whitening gel dentists in Australia use is a regulated substance and not available via pharmacies or supermarkets. When the gel is used together with your custom made trays, the contact area with the tooth is almost 100%, meaning the whole tooth receives a holistic whitening effect, not just small portions on the front face of the tooth. Even though the treatment price can be higher initially, patients often comment how much more effective our treatment is at whitening their teeth for a much longer period of time.

Does Bleaching Weaken Enamel

No it doesn’t weaken the enamel, but the gel is a regulated substance needs to be supervised by a dentist to make sure it’s used properly.

Does Bleaching Increase Sensitivity

The solution we use causes very little sensitivity except in extreme cases. Any sensitivity can be easily managed through the use of sensitive toothpaste and by reducing the duration of your bleaching sessions (i.e. bleach only for a few days at a time).
